Member Profile:
Catherine Hughes |
Catherine first trod the boards when she joined Hatton Operatic
Society in Middlesex at the age of 14. She was a member for 15
years, first as a dancer and then progressing to many lead roles her
favourite being Adelaide in Guys and Dolls which she took on 10
days before the production and had to learn very quickly!
In 1986 Catherine won the Noda Award for Best Supporting Actress for
her portrayal of Louie in The Matchgirls, not the most
glamorous role as Catherine had to have a bald head!! During the
late 1980s and early 1990s Catherine also did parts for other local
Operatic Societies ... she performed in West Side Story 3
times, Chicago, Anything Goes and played the lead parts
of Polly Browne in The Boyfriend and Anne in Half a Sixpence.
In 1994 Catherine moved to Lincoln, got married and had babies and so
put her Thespian tendencies on hold for a few years! At the turn
of the century Catherine could not hold back any longer[!] so decided
to join Lincoln Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society. For the
next few years Catherine had a great time at The Theatre Royal in
various productions and guises! Anything Goes, South
Pacific, The Boyfriend and Sweet Charity to name but
a few.
In 2006 Catherine took part in an amazing Gilbert and
Sullivan charity concert at the City school Lincoln which featured
amateur singers and professionals alike to raise money for cancer.
Catherine now finds herself at The Broadbent, which she really loves,
joining in March this year after divorce and children left her unable
to commit to LAODS strict rehearsal schedule. Catherine's first
production, in May this year, with LRP was The Farndale Mikado. This
was particular fun as Catherine has done the "proper" Mikado
twice! Just a few subtle differences!! Catherine then took on
her first role in a straight play as Olivia in the recent LRP
production of The Shell Seekers. This was an enormous challenge
as she didn't have any jolly songs to sing and had to be very serious
for most of the production!
