“Lilies on the Land”
By The Lions part
An amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books
Telling the story of an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history – the Women’s Land Army in World War Two. Charting the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work long, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort. It was a shock for the city girls in particular. As well as new skills and knowledge to learn, the work was very hard and farm machinery which was made to be operated by fit men, who were used to the physical requirements of the job. The women in the WLA did all the jobs that were required for a farm to function normally – threshing, milking, ploughing, reclaiming land, picking crops, hedging and ditching.
Based on hundreds of letters from and interviews with original Land Girls along with songs from the period, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny and moving portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest, unsung heroines.
